phpAdsNew installation upgrade

January 12th, 2006

phpAdsNew is an open-source ad server, with an integrated banner management interface and tracking system for gathering statistics. With phpAdsNew you can easily rotate paid banners and your own in-house advertisements. You can even integrate banners from third party advertising companies.

Since morning or rather yesterday night we have been trying install and configure it with slowly increasing success rate . :) I say slowly increasing because this involved a re-install , upgrade of the previous version to start with as it had some critical updates to be looked into at first. We noticed it first when we tried to run the maintanance script . Now upgrading phpAdsNew in my opinion was quite different than normal php scripts installation - easy but different. First we had to download the latest version from SourceForge which hosts phpAdsnew , then unzip and upload the files in a folder named phpadsnew_newname and also rename the old existing folder to phpAdsNew_oldname . Now , if you have shell access , it would be pretty easy , using the mv command , and then running untar . Now from the old installation , make sure you KEEP the config file and also keep a backup of the MySQL database if possible. With that done , now you can safely rename the new folder to the default phpAdsNew folder and put / replace the config file from your backup and simply head on the login to the Admin interface. The first time you login , the script will automatically take you through the process of 2 step installation which involves just clicking 2 buttons and it is done.

If you are installing phpAdsNew for the first time , and not upgrading …. you will require to have to create a MySQL database at first with a db user having dba rights and it would also help having access to phpMyAdmin. First step of course involves copying the files which should be extracted in your hard drive or you can also untar if you are using shell . With the files and database in place , simply point your browser to http://yoursite.com/phpAdsNew , if it doesnt redirect you to the installation file then either check if your server is configured to run php files as the index file . If it doesnt then point to http://yoursite.com/phpAdsNew/admin/index.php . The first page is the license which you should surely read and then follow it to the server check page . There are certain checks which is automatically done by the script to find out if your server has the minimum requirements and configurations for running the ads server . You do need to take care of most of the settings as they are quite critical for both performance and security . The step after this involves creating the admin account - which will control the Ads server - where you will be filling up simple details and after this the MySQL database info . Hopefully you hae remembered to keep the details in handy - all you will do now is put them in. As i mentioned before the database has to be created mannually outside and the script will not do for you , and also take note the database user has the rights to create necessary tables , modify , alter etc . With all this done , you are almost at the end of the simply installation .

[...] With the installation of phpAdsNew done , the next steps were understanding about the Publishers and Advertisers , Campaigns , Banners and much more , which would be beyond the scope of this post .. maybe i will cover in another. So lets skip down to the Google Adsense part . Just to let you know I used this in both Invisionboard forums and also in my Wordpress Blog i.e this one. The first part was just generating the Google Adsense code from my Google Adsense account. For generating the Adsense codes, nowadays i mostly use the Mother Earth i.e the default adsense colour schemes , as many reknowned Adsense optimizers advocate using that scheme and not changing the colour to any other. I need help configuring my web pages to interact with Open Ads. I had another designer to upgrade my existing version of phpadsnew, to the new version of OPEN ADS. Everything is now upgraded and complete, so this part of project is not required anymore.

I need help with the next phase of project….The next step is to go into the code on my websites pages, and match up the zones (many are already created in Open Ads) so that I can paste in the google adsense codes. I will provide with exact screenshots of where I need the banner slots to go. It is basically the same banner slots as you see already on the website http://www.loopwise.com with just a few additional ones.

Can you help me with this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Taylor
